Personally, if I am taking a sick day, my company pays my sick time...and keeps it separate from vacation...so if I am calling in sick, I am going to be at home sick.
Wow, for me fighting a shark would not be an optimal way to lower stress.
But then, neither would sitting idly by while a shark attacked children.
So I guess it comes down to a question of whether the trip halfway around the world on holiday would have been okay with the employer had his sunbathing been uninterrupted.
An interesting conundrum. True, if you call in sick to work with the flu, and later that day attend a ball game, that's blatant misuse of sick time.
But this guy was "on leave" due to stress. How do we know what his doctor advised? I can picture a doctor easily saying "Take a vacation, relax on the beach, spend time with friends," which is what he was doing. Not being well enough to cope with the daily stresses of a job does not mean you are also not well enough to travel.
Many details are missing from this report. Was it a paid leave? Unpaid? What was company policy -- do you have to report your leave activities to the company for approval? I have no idea what typical policies are in the UK.
Personally, I don't think you need to be at home when you're sick but you shouldn't be flying to Australia to lay on the beach, neither.
I more meant "home" as an example. I have gone to the dr, or the drugstore. Or the grocery store for food and cold medicine...but not out to lunch with friends, or with sharks in Australia.
