I know here in the Midwest, it seems every jobs I have been sent in my email is a 12 to 9 shift or 12 to 8. Is this becoming a norm? My background is in I.T. So I'm like, what happened to the normal 9 to 5/Mon-Fri.. In call center/customer service, that has always been the norm to be thrown any shift.. That might work for some and that's cool. And in this economy, 10 to 1, you have to take it. I figure..

what type of work specifically? It's very common for certain roles (e.g. operators (NOC/SOC), maintenance techs, and help desk) to operate in shifts.

If you are talking about working in a call center that is staffed 24/7, then that (12-9pm) range is considered 2nd shift in most areas of the country and probably has been a usual 2nd shift time frame for a while anyway.

A US-based company with a call center could also have a lot of customers on the West coast and stagger hours to accomodate call-ins from customers who are in pacific time zone. I have worked hours similar to that and have enjoyed it as I did not have to get up early.

Yeah, like I said, that's norm for call center and customer service positions. But I guess I was out of the norm, because all my Help desk setting were like 8:00 to 4:30. Even when I had a software testing job, it was norm 9 to 5. Now when I worked for a GPS company in the past, I was in the technical support, so of course, I got the any shift. So I guess, it's the time in my life, I need to re-evaluate my career, working in I.T. has been alright for the last 15 yrs. But sometimes I think, I should have gotten a medical profession in I.T., instead of the corporate. So thanks for the responses...

I've never heard of anyone who works 12-9 (except for retail, which can be any hour)...but I'd love those hours.

That was cool when I was fresh and 21 or a single man. But when I got a wife and 2 teenagers, that was not cool. I guess I have to go back to looking for the jobs I started out working at 21. lol. I wore many hats over the years,(Administrative Assistant, Fast Food Manager, Software Tester, Help Desk, Technical Support, etc) . Those jobs in my early days, held the norm 8-5, except for the Tech Support.
