I'm curious to know if employers in the U.S. still have qualms about calling an applicant if the app has an out of area area code for their phone number. I have an AT&T non-contract phone. Number is for Seattle area, but I'm moving out of state in a few weeks and wonder if I should put money into my account or just buy a new SIM card when I get where I'm going. For me, it costs 10 cents/min. incoming and outgoing. If the concensus here is to buy a new SIM card, how much do those cost generally? The cheapest - I don't use my phone much. thanks.
I think it helps to have an area code in an area where you plan to find work. I don't think it always matters, but will give you a slight edge over other applicants. I know that people do hold on to their old numbers when they move, but it can be confusing to a prospective hiring manager at an employer.
Where do you say you live in your applications and resume? I don't think the phone number is very important if you have a local permanent address. But if you can, switch to a local number. It may reduce the number of questions they ask.
I have no idea what a smart phone is and I wonder if anyone does. You see, people can be smart, but not objects. Not even the Smart car. When an object becomes my competition, that's when I know it's time to take myself out of the game.
In the Hawaii forum, they say you will not be called back if you don't have a local area code, so it sometimes matters.
And believe it or not, some people do not have unlimited phone service. And employees of smaller employers are often forbidden to make long-distance calls from work phones---and they could work in HR.
And, there have been many warnings not to call unknown area codes, due to being rerouted to foreign scam lines and being charged hundreds of dollars.
