I'm going to school in 1 month and I'm thrilled! Was going to give my two week notice but after being told that I need to do even more and also train a new person plus type out a new training schedule and training manual..it was icing on the cake. So let's hear your stories on what led you to change careers?
I never had what could be considered a "career", just a bunch of jobs. I had two consecutive jobs in the accounting field spanning over 4 years, so, I suppose if you consider "accounting" my career, I wanted out of it because its low paying, mind numbingly boring, tedious and repetitive, requires a ridiculous certification that requires a masters degree equivalent to even sit for it and yearly CE credits, to move anywhere. In addition to all that, I hate accounting, and intentionally chose the finance path in college to avoid it, but still be in the numbers part of business.

Well, I had a decent job as a financial analyst for about 1.5 years after I left accounting. Then I got laid off. Now Im a temp, and my job is pretty much secretarial work for a sales department, which I took out of pure desperation.

Thanks. One thing I can offer, if you think youve probably already done the most degrading thing you probably ever will be faced with doing, you are probably wrong.
I got sick of teaching high school science. The reasons are obvious.
I still like teaching people (and do that in my part-time jobs) but not in repeated group situations (like summer camp, which I am teaching now). I'd rather give a one-time tour or something.

So what did you do to change careers? For me it was almost 2 years of having too much stress, working long hours and being passed over for promotions that were given to people with little or no experience and no college education..who barely worked 8 hours. So I decided that my skill set was not a skill at all.
I work in food service, mainly in a nursing home setting. Well, I did until I got fired in October. I have been wanting to get out of that field for a while but not having any kind of higher education, I am sort of stuck.
I am going on my second year of college (this is me attempting to get out of food service) and I'm hoping to go into the hospitality field. I'm still deciding what area I want to specialize in, either hotel management, tourism, or just stick with food service but become a director instead of just a cook. I'm looking to get an internship this fall so hopefully it will help me figure out what exactly I want to do.
10 years in food service is enough for me, however since the job market is so bleak and difficult to change careers, it feels like the safe bet; because I have the experience and I will eventually have the degree to back it up also.
I have been working at the same job since I graduated high school while also going to a community college to get my associates. But the day that I can leave this job and go to university to get my bachelors is approaching before too long and I am definitely excited about that day!
Congratulations on reaching your day dnvrsoul!
