The other day I was talking to my cousin who is Masters educated about work. He said he has been applying everywhere with no responses. My Uncle told him to put a suit on and walk into the company and personally hand in the resume and be personable. Have any of you ever tried this???

Why don't you just go ahead and tell him that if he takes 2 jobs at $11/hr, with some juggling, it will be like making $22 an hour? Or is the advice you give to others on this forum not good enough for family?
There is a book called "What color is your parachute?" Many of my patrons tell me their doctors recommend this book for ideas as how to get work again.
I think your uncle has the right idea. I have also heard that someone out of a job needs to get up just as they would if they were going to a job and spend 40 hours a week looking. I can imagine how hard this would be on a persons ego, but when looking for a job, one has to put the ego on hold and just go through the motions.
The worst thing a person can do is sit in front of the TV or computer. That causes depression and depression shows when one is looking for a job.
Another good way is to sign on with a temp agency. Many companies want to look employees over as to how they fit in on the job before giving them a job that has grievance privileges.
Years ago I read that you should decide what you want to do and go looking for that job. I did that and am now retired after working 28 years on the job. Funny thing is that I looked for so long I gave up and started selling cosmetics but one of the places I put an application in for called me six months later. Go plant the job seed and hopefully the harvest will come.

I tell people to spend a lot of time at the country club. Mingle, play golf with and gather leads.
I'd be interested to know about *recent*success rates with just walking in. In NYC/NJ area, they've hyped up security hardcore since 9/11. You won't get past security.
It's an old idea that is being recycled. Unfortunately, many, many companies do not have human resources onsite. The HR people only come in as necessary. There is no one there willing and able to speak with job seekers.
I tried the whole dress up and hand in the resume, if they talked to me at all I just got pointed to the computer chair to fill out the online app
Also, read the Parachute book, good advice, but not always effective.
Can you sum up what you got out of the parachute book?
