I started my new job last week. It's only part time (which I was working at my previous job) so I only have 24 hrs in the books. The church I attend (all my life) was looking for a new church secretary as the current one is retiring. I was looking for a change after working for 20 years in a small sales office. I decided this was the right move for me. I didn't realize how much the secretary does in a day. I am sooooo overwhelmed and I'm only getting 2 weeks (48 hrs total) training. After trying to absorb everything, I would have felt A LOT more comfortable with 4 weeks training. And the secretary who's training me will not be available after the 2 weeks so further training time is not an option. I'm on my own!!!!

I know that learning a new job is overwhelming at first and I accept that. The anxiety comes in when I realize I have to do all this by myself in another week with no one there to ask. When I started the office job 20 years ago, I loved it right from the start. This one not so much, but I think it's just the anxiety of being left on my own so soon. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of situation?

On top of that, I was not aware at all that churches do not have to pay unemployment. No one told me this in the interview and it didn't even occur to me to ask. So I'm beginning to think that this was a bad move. Too late now, I know. Although my previous boss has left an open door for me if it didn't work out (if a position is available).

I figured I will muddle through for a couple months to see if it gets any easier. Does that seem a reasonable amount of time?

First of all, take a deep breath. Second of all I would say that 90% of your duties are routine work. After a few weeks you could probably accomplish most of your duties with your eyes closed. Just remember that you have been attending the church all your life, so they must trust you enough to be the secretary, and most people are understanding enough there are going to be "bumps in the road" as with any new person with a job.
