I was just fired for incompetence by a very difficult and emotionally unhinged boss. He then contacted my second job to tell the manager (who he knows) that he fired me. Is this illegal or just inappropriate? If I did not have a good relationship with my other manager, my second job could have been compromised.

Probably illegal or at least opens him up to a civil suit, but since you have no damages, what do you plan on doing about it?

No plans, was just curious. Seems a pretty nasty thing to do. My other boss had to ask him if there was anything he should know and if I was stealing from my primary job-pretty embarrassing for me.

Without damages, you're wasting your energy even thinking about it. Although it is without a doubt againt employment laws, your damages have to be something more than just hurt feelings.

Move on. Don't let it consume you like it has your old boss.

If you're thinking of suing for slander, hopefully you'll be careful about making medical diagnoses such as that the person is "emotionally unhinged."

Not sure "unhinged" would be the medical term in such a case...

Actually not illegal if indeed you were fired for "incompetence." Poor form and vindictive, but if it was the truth, it's not illegal.

I have only once in my life reached out to someone's employer to let them know about their employee, it was when someone I knew illegally entered my home, stole personal information, and used it to illegally obtain controlled substances in my name. A number of authorities on the local, state, and federal levels were involved in what became a very complex situation with numerous felony charges against her. I contacted her boss and suggested that he reach out to the lead federal investigator in the case about her, and provided his contact information. She was fired as she should have been given the sensitive nature of her position and that fact that she was a stealing, lying, drug addicted mess. But because everything I told him was the truth, there was nothing she could do about it. (Not to mention the restraining order I took out against her...)
