My wife and I are from the Northeast and both are having trouble finding good employment so we are considering relocating to Florida. I like Broward county, specifially Boca Raton as well as Naples (though we've never been to Naples). Looking for people who have may lived in both areas who would know the differences between gulf coast and atlantic coast towns. Broward county seems more populous and has more action. It also seems to have more people from the northeast. Naples in my research seems a bit slower and possibly more people from the midwest. What are the pluses and minuses of both towns? How about prospect for employment or starting your own business? Thanks

You would be going from the frying pan right into the fire if you think FL is the solution to not being able to find good jobs in the Northeast.

Unless you have a medical background(RN) you're looking at low paying service industry jobs for the most part.

Naples for example caters to well off retired people and snowbirds.

Not people of working age who want to make a good living.

First, Boca is in Palm Beach County, not Broward.

Second, I have lived in Boca and now Naples. I left Boca a long time ago (1983) so I don't have current information.

The east cost is full of people from the NE because of I-95. The west coast folks are from the MW because of I-75.

Seain is right on all points.

What are your job skills? What kind of business do you want to start?

I'd have to agree. Last I heard FLA's unemployment rate was pretty horrible much like the rest of the SE.

Georgia was slightly over 10% when I left last year. There's just nothing there but $7 hr crap...

The economy in Florida is terrible... you're going to have to explain to us a little bit more of your plans before we can tell you what to do there..

I'd go to the midwest over Florida any day.

Boca Raton and S FL in general is a much bigger metro area than Naples. There are many more job opportunities in S FL and several large and mid sized corporations in S FL. You generally go to Naples after you earned your money.

I'd recommend the PNW.

Boeing... Microsoft .... Amazon.... to name a few. A gorgeous place to live as well.

And even if that is the case you need to be fluently bi-lingual. My SIL is a nurse and had to pay to be tested and re registered and is having a hell of a time with finding decent employement down there because she is not bi-lingual and they live between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami.

I'd (almost) rather starve on the Gulf Coast than endure living on the Atlantic coast.

Well I have lived on both coast is areas close to the aforementioned cities. Boca Raton is first off in Palm Beach County. NOT Broward. As for your question, I would definitely advise you to post this on the Florida forums because they know much more regarding those facts and statistics. You'll get responses from people in both cities and a better perspective of what you should do.
