Maybe like attracts like? However, as the OP noted, the question was in relation to the TV news field not the employment arena in general.

You don't know that its important to be ATTRACTIVE to be on TV News? Who wants to look at a ugly face every night?

Of course they can, that is not to say it is good business practice, but it is not a protected class, neither is weight.

If they don't like your race, gender, age, appearance, etc then they will not choose you. They will be PC about it though. We decided to go with another qualified candidate.

Seriously? You can't appreciate different looking people...you know, get past the obvious and actually listen to the news presented? It has to be read by a pretty person? Oh, honey, that's so shallow. It's obvious that those hiring in that field view this attribute as key, shallowness abounds, but that's a tacky comment nonetheless.

Yes, very much so the way you look plays a big role in the corporate world. I agree it's discrimination but that's fact of life.

For women, it's worse. If you are fat and/or look like a man, your chance of getting hired is much lower. For men, it's not as bad. Obviously, if you are fat, it gets bad.

Sadly, most people know that being fat is a huge problem but do nothing about it.

When we say "looks", we must understand it's not just your facial look. 90% of a man's looks come from his body shape, body language, and the way he dresses. So long you are not missing one eye and don't look like a horse with face smashed in, your facial look is just ... average. However, if you are dress nice and have a confident demeanor and a OK body, you are then cool and attractive.

For women, it's more complicated. Again, dress plays a big role but the body shape is a huge deal. If you are huge, you are just ugly no matter how you dress. :-(

So very obviously true. If looks were the sole criteria for a TV newscaster, the majority of icons in the field would never have got one foot in the door. No doubt someone of TVSG's ilk wouldn't watch TV news if someone such as Cronkite were in the chair but would sit there glued to the screen if a big-breasted stuttering bimbo with an IQ of -100 were floundering through it. Thank goodness he doesn't represent the majority - or at least one sincerely hopes not!
