Would you take a job that was a signficant pay cut, I'm talking like $20k to 30k for a new career field? I dislike my current job but the pay is excellent and have been offered a new job in a new line of work. I'm not sure if I will enjoy this new field but want to try something new. I can afford the pay cut but I'm just not sure if it's the right thing to do. Any advice?

Is there any way you can shadow this job for a couple of days before you make your mind up?

You should make sure that the new field is something you can really see yourself doing for the foreseeable future before accepting the offer. If you like the field you are in and merely dislike your job, you should not risk a steady and respectable pay check, but look for something else in your current field.

I would never take a pay cut that huge, is this new field so new that litterally none of your skills are transferable? I would love to go into some other fields of work but defense contracts are being cut left and right and I would have to move and they likely dont pay what I make now.

It sounds like it's the right thing to do for you. Especially since you're even considering taking the pay cut. You can afford it and you dislike your current position. The only problem is, what if you don't like the new field or company? Is there any way you can research the field, position or company to find out the real story?

How old are you?

Age makes a big difference in this decision.

If you're under 40, I would say go for it. don''t stay in a job you don't like for decades. If you get into something you like, and you are happy at, its worth the pay cut. Nothing is worse than a job you hate.

But, if you're close to retirement, say, in your 50's, perhaps you should stick it out. There won't be time to come back up to your current earning power.

You only live once. Go for it, if it's the right thing for you.
