All of the companies I ever worked for went out of business. Somehow, I always managed to change jobs just before the company folded. (No, I'm not claiming any special ability to detect a dying company...it was just plain coincidence. Or was it? )

So what? None of your business. Get your priorities in order and start deciding what you want to be when you grow up as unemployment compensation doesn't last indefinitely - as you well know from experience.

If I was to read anything into this, it would be that these folks are trying to support eachother through some difficult times, as your employer seems to fire managers on a very frequent basis. It doesn't mean that those remaining will not still go for lunch. I used to go for lunch twice a week with other senior management, and it was just to get away from the grind and try to work out some company issues without interruptions from staff and phones.

The thing that was the biggest red flag was whether or not payroll would be made, if paychecks, including direct deposit would be late.

I imagine by now your coworkers are thinking the end is near as well. In one company I worked for, we had an office pool as to the date we were going to be gone. And yes management was aware of it, participated in at as well as this was a bank whose financial difficulties were well known publicly.
