My first "adult" job I landed 9 days after I turned 21. I went to a school bus company filled out the application and started driving a school bus(mini bus) the next day. Within 2 months I had my Class 2(back in 86 before the CDL), and I was driving a 80 passenger flat nose pusher. I was in heaven! I was 21-had a job back then that paid $10hr with full benefits and retirement. We were able to buy our first house within the year too. Ah the good old days.
I went into the movie theatre and asked the owner if he was hiring. He said yes. I told him I was over 16 and 30 days, and therefore didn't need "working papers" (under 16 and 30 days you had to have papers). He hired me on the spot and I started working on the clock the same moment.
In what country? It is very difficult to get an engineering job in the USA.

I've known about a dozen people who graduated either this year or last year with a BS in engineering (from mechanical to civil to electrical) and all graduated with jobs lined up.
Even in 2001 when my father (a chem engineer) was laid off, it took him about two months to find a better paying job, which was a lot quicker than when he graduated with his MS in the early 80s.
But these were all either in Pennsylvania or New Jersey.
After that, when I was 19 it took me a year and a half after filling out applications to get a job. Vocational rehab was useless but I had a few friends that were willing to drive me around and interpret for me.
I ended up getting two jobs, both through personal connections. Seems like the only way in hard economic times, and also when you have anything working against you (like disability).

I'm not talking about how old you were but how long did it take from the time you first started filling out applications to the time you finally landed a job?
It took me almost 2 years to get my first job. I began looking at the end of 2004, right when I turned 15 and every employer said "Sorry kid, no experience, no job." Which I would hear over and over.
In late 2005, my family relocated from rural Connecticut to Orlando, FL and still with no luck, I was hired by Walt Disey World in September 2006 and worked there for a year before I was fired in August 2007 for walking out
First job after school was about 30 minutes after walking in the door. Current job (26 years) about 1 month.
First job I filled out some form and waited while the boss looked it over and grunted a few times and told me about the job. Simply asked if I was still interested and when I said yes, told me to start tomorrow. (it was loading and unloading porta potties on delivery trucks and taking empty ones to locations for regular truck to setup)
Current one was found while making a emergency deliver. basically i was in the right place at the right time and just got talking to the flight manager at that place while waiting for the service truck to arrive and it turned out they were hiring for a position he throught i might like to apply for. After application, iterviews, some waiting for check to occur, they offred it to me. Nothing specialized on my part but knowing the laquages they operate under and some of the main locations they go to. It was pure 100% luck I got this job (and 100% doing it correctly that kept it)
