Also, if you have a bunch of issues that everyone wants fixed right now, maybe you can make note them, go to your boss, let him/her know what all of these issues are, and ask him/her to prioritize them in order of severity/importance or possibly offer your own suggestions oh what you think could reasonably be done right away, within a month, etc.
I work in a govt environment and there is NO project management, so I'm always putting out fires and never know what the priorities are, since nobody seems to know what they are, and projects are done in an ad-hoc, willy-nilly fashion. It's a tough environment for someone who is more comfortable with structure, so I can relate.
