I think that's it in a nutshell.

For me personally, I believe I 'deserve' a job because:

I WANT to work (and generally like to work)
I'm intelligent
A hard worker with a good work ethic
I produce above average results

You sound like you have the attributes to be successful, good luck and congratulations to whatever company is fortunate enough to land you.

You too, good luck my friend I love your attitude.

If the elderly are still capable of doing the job, they still have the benefit of experience over the young Turks.

I agree.

Even for physically demanding jobs, I hear people saying policemen need to retire after 20 years because of physical requirements I say bull**** they don't need to be on patrol there is so much routine investigative work that they could be shifted to. Home or car burglary happens? Send the old guy to interview, take pictures, dust for prints, file a report, etc. and leave the younger guys on patrol.

Yeah, this.

No one owes me anything, but it's not as if I don't have anything to offer, either.

Guaranteed employment creates incentives for laziness
The ideal is a free-market system with some "protections". I agree with what you say about "incentives for laziness", but then what about people who are not lazy but are "unemployable" because of unfair discrimination (i.e. age, or credit report (which right now is often simply because they were unemployed and have no income), etc.). While guarantees are an incentive for laziness, lack of protections are an incentive for desititution and suicide and great costs to society.

You just described labor unions.

True, a degree of regulation is necessary to prevent against discrimination as well as monopolies...

Someone got my point! If you want to see how effective it is when everyone is guaranteed a job...look at the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of labor unions or government work.

God help us if all of private industry worked the same way as a labor union.
