The answer lies in the question. You're free because of Y. Gen Y takes a lot of flak for not having a good work ethic and being deemed unsuitable employees. This Thursday before you go to bed take a moment to reflect on what you are grateful to have right now, and then take a moment think about those who are mostly in the 18 to 30 age range that are overseas right now operating against those who would wish to do you harm while you lay your head down to sleep.

Veterans age 18 to 24 have some of the highest unemployment rates of all at around 21%.

Unemployment rate for young veterans hits 21.1 percent - washingtonpost.com

Well while you're preeening yourself over there - you WILL remember to thank all those vets who came before Gen Y won't you?

You remember - the ones who fought and died so YOU and your Gen Y had YOUR freedom.

Absolutely but as a country at war it is imperative that we honor the vets of today. The point of this post being in the work section was the unemployment rate of current vets, which while I wish to take nothing away from all who have sacrificed is, only pertinent of those serving today................mate

Again the point of the post is to show the travesty that is taking place in America with youg veterans returning from a combat zone, many of whom are in the Guard and Reserves who have to try and find work when they come back to find there are no jobs for them. It's not just the economy causing them problems. Employers are unable to see how their skills translate into the civilian workforce and there are many who are ungrateful Americans who see hiring a Guardsman or Reservist as a liability because of the possibility of that employee being deployed.

I see lots of posts about people whining about how they can't get hired because they're old. How about someone who hasn't worked for 20 to 30 years in the workforce and had the chance to save money over that time period, chose to serve their country, and then have that very service held against them.

Young people all over are having a tough time finding jobs...it's the times.
Have you considered applying for a Federal job? Veterans get preference over non-veterans.

And not to minimize the bravery of today's soldiers, but I'm sorry, Iraq and Afghanistan never posed the slightest threat to our freedom. It has already been established that the fundamental reasons for this war were phony. I personally think Dubya was just trying to impress his daddy.... a heck of a thing to get people killed over...

No, it's the folks that fought Hitler and the Soviets (indirectly)...the true threats to our freedom that I'll be thanking tomorrow.

I'm no longer a job seeker and for veterans seeking employment federal jobs aren't as easy to obtain as the non-vets think. Filling out federal job applications are a skill in themselves.

And to answer the rest of your post hopefully it doesn't take another terror attack on US soil that harms you or people you love to change your way of thinking. Big, bad, scary Communists never once attacked America.

I think the same can be said of Soldiers of other Nations, it’s not just a problem for US Soldiers.

With all due respect to military personal, someone who was in the Armed Forces for 20 or 30 yrs is career military. If someone chooses to pursue a military career they can do quite well if they have ambition and in addition they have lifetime medical benefits.

Not the same as someone who finds themselves laid off at age 50 with no medical insurance.

The are organizations and programs that help vets with those long and complicated forms. When a vet is leaving the service voluntarily and honorably, they are offered those classes. Many hear rumors that's all BS and don't bother.

Those who leave dishonorably, get considerably less help and don't even know these things exist. They also have a MUCH harder time finding someone (even a minimum wage employer) willing to give them a job. Deservedly so.

PS To any vets still unemployed - Border Patrol is hiring. Check it out! They do give preferential treatment to those who served in the military - it's a point based system. Gather your paperwork (if you were responsible and gathered, then kept it) and call the VA for assistance.
