I have been working as a census enumerator, and have found it very enjoyable. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The worst thing (if you want to call it that) was a guy who refused to give me his phone number. But after reading this article washingtonpost.com it made me wonder about other enumerators. I know there are some who post here.
Was your experience good or bad overall? Were you ever threatened? What was your worst experience? Would you do again in 2020?
WOW. After reading that I think I'm glad I wasn't eligible to apply.
On a side note - I don't know why so many people got worked up over the census - I thought the amount of questions asked was very limited. I was very surprised they didn't ask for more in depth information than they did.
I don't either. I believe some people got longer forms that asked more questions, but most people had the short forms. Several of the earlier census asked many more questions.
I worked as a crew leader assistant for the address canvassing operation last Spring, but I still did a lot of enumerator work.
There were a few times where I would be standing outside of someone's home and verifying their address when someone would come outside and ask what I was doing. Some people (mainly those who lived in rougher neighborhoods) became very defensive when I told them I was a census worker. One guy threatened to file a lawsuit against the census bureau because he thought I was taking pictures of his house with my HHC.
I had some people say " Ah, the census bureau f***ed up my stuff last time so I'm not going to answer anything." For the most part though, the people who saw me weren't to obnoxious. I had one person on my crew that had a guy come out of his house with a baseball bat and get in his face, but nothing came of it. Another one of my listers had to run from a pit bull, but she was able to get to her car before it got to her.
