Was wondering if any areas have mandatory city inspections before a house can be rented???

I am in Redford, Michigan (suburb near Detroit) and we have a mandatory inspection prior to a house being able to be rented. Not saying that this happens 100% of the time, but if the City finds out that a house is being rented without the inspection, there are some pretty stiff fines. The City if trying to avoid "slum lord" type landlords.

Are looking all over the State of Wisconsin for employment first, so do not have an exact area yet.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure there is no statewide law like that in Wisconsin, or even in most cities. Possibly in a few specific cities?

Thanks .... inspections are not Statewide here in Michigan, only by City. Just checking so I would know what to ask when I called to inquire about a home.

I was about to say that I didn't think that WI had any inspection requirements but on a whim I did quick Google search and that is not the case - at least municipally. The City of La Crosse, for instance, has some requirements: City of La Crosse, WI - Official Website - Rental Inspection Requirements

What I would suggest is that if you are focusing on a particular location(s), call the municipality and see if they have any requirements. You're more likely to get an unbiased opinion by asking them versus the landlord.

Good luck!

It is my understanding that the apartment/home/building has to pass inspection in most towns that I am aware of in WI and the landlord/owner has to be given a Rental License in order to rent the building.
