I dunno-- it seems to me that NC's main draw is weather. Once you remove that dimension (though admittedly a huge factor for many people), I bet the two states are at least equivalent in (per capita?) terms of people moving there voluntarily. In fact, Wisconsin could have some advantages, considering it isn't in the Bible Belt.

I still wouldn't say that moving to a state with 90-degree weather for 5 months is very attractive, no matter how cold WI can get..

Yeah, I'm struggling to see the advantages there, though you can definitely hit the beach for longer, if that's something that means more than culture to you. NC is nice, but so is WI.

well only speaking for myself (and the wife), we much preferred the climate we lived in during our 6 years in SC compared to our lifetime up here. Did we love the days the heat index hit 105-115? Nope, not crazy lol.
BUT, we do enjoy summer activities from tennis to the beach to walking towns to cruising with the top down (yes we'd do all those on 95+ degree days). So we'd take the extreme temps as it meant for the most part we could do what we liked near year round there. Heck we could spend every day walking Charleston, Savannah, etc......
Up in WI, we dont like winter sports & activities even though born/raised here. That's just us. That's why we headed south in '09, and if it wasn't for having a grandchild we'd probably still be down there.

Funny thing, we had plenty of neighbors from the midwest including those from WI when we were in SC; but i've only met a couple folks up here who migrated north and like it.

To each their own. After all, WI is a beautiful state it just has 4 distinct seasons with drastic changes that don't occur down south. And yes, the south can be crippled by a couple inches of snow, i used to laugh but realized with no plows or salt/sand trucks to speak of, it can be understood (and the ice is a real issue)

What culture in WI? Lol....sorry but this one makes my family laugh...we see more rednecks and drunks here than we ever did in NC. Education level? If it isn't the Packers or hunting most people have no clue or interest unless you are at a UW event. Even Madison has limited events and venues compared to other state capitals and certainly Raliegh. (Though the protests againest Walker were unique I'll grant you.)

In WI unless they know your family or are family it's hard to make friends...and WI suffers from the 'Minnesota nice' trait as much as Minnesota dies.

The bible belt is not that much an issue in NC compared to most other southern states....and all it really means is baptists ignore each other in the ABC store.

You seem hung up on weather just because it gets hot in NC....sorry...but as I said....the weather is either location isn't why I feel NC is a more comfortable place to live.

Thankfully it doesn't stay that warm for that long.

Sorry, but NC is far less educated (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...nal_attainment) and more redneck than Wisconsin. If you like it there in 'neckland better, that's fine with me, but you're not going to pretend it's Shangri La as long as I'm around.

Maybe you're just really bad at "making friends?" Also, I don't hunt (nor do any of my friends), so let's just stop pretending it's all people around here talk about, m'kay? I talk to a lot of people, and haven't had a single hunting conversation in over a decade.

The thing is--there's no let-up or reprieve like you would have in WI. It's just constant heat and humidity, and the only defense is air conditioning. In WI, you have some cold winter months, but you can just put on a winter coat, and you're generally fine. And I have to say--Madison is truly one of the best places in America to live. I've been in Raleigh , and it doesn't measure up.

Huh? I grew up in New England and lived in a number of places, such as Chicago and SF. I moved to WI at 23 and left at 32 for a job change, but I LOVE the culture of Wisconsin. I'd love to retire there, and go back for at least a week every year to bask in the culture and cruise the state

That is correct, Madison is a good place. I had to move due to job reasons and I would be there presently otherwise. Many native Wisconsinites have not ventured far from the state do not realize how nice it is compared to many other places (which often have substantially higher cost of living).
