We are in Alaska we just purchased a 2007 Ultra Classic, the engine sounds as if there are marbles in it. My husband is a mechanic and knows that it's not right but he doesn't work on motorcycles. The shop here can't identify the problem and tells him to go ahead and ride it and see what happens he knows at some point he will be stranded on the road somewhere. Has anybody else out there experienced this challenge and has the tech's identified the issue. Our Harely shop technicians up here are not that savvy IMO, but we need to get this fixed.

Hi,
I had a brand new 1997 springer..still have it. I had the same problem. After 4k miles, at the 95th, the engine sounded like pistons were flapping. Took it to my dealer... they tore the engine down...after I raised hell with HDI on the phone. It turned out, they assembled the engine wrong...basket bearings in backwards. The engine was about to freeze up. If i would have been going 60mph...I'd be dead now. Pistons were shot, bearings ground up and crank rods blue from heat...HDI gave me a new engine with same serial number installed in 2 days. The mechanic who worked on my bike had seen this problem before...so make sure you inform them of this possibility...they will be liable for any injuries if the engine seizes up. As I was told, the basket bearings come in a tube and are assembled in a certain direction...the assembler just put them in backwards...
