Hi there folks,,,although I have posted this type of ? before it was a year or more ago..wondering if the same areas would be reccomended in this economy? here is what we are looking for, and area with lots of outdoor recreation, lakes, hiking, nature preserves, farm land. We have 3 kids, (9,6, 3) good schools,a safe small town, outside a larger town with all the "stuff" stores etc if needed. We would like to rent a farm house, not to rural that we are isolated. We have been told the areas around Madison (Elkhorn, Lake Mills). We also need to know about the employment in the area. Is it horrible like most places? Are they any opportunities...my husband is a construction superintendent, but grew up on a farm so is familiar in that field and can do most anything..if any their are jobs around..I am a stay at home..so.. We have family in Knapp, and Menomonie..but don't want to live near them! lol...I guess we are looking for a place like the show "Gilmore girls" town square, parades, farmers market, and welcoming of new ppl. A place where folks know and care for eachother. We are currently living in Maryland near my family, but we have been searching for a new/better place to raise our crew for a very long time...It is $$ here, and caters to the tourists thanks in advance..we hope to be moving within the next couple of months..(before or right after x-mas) Any suggestions would be appreciated..We hear that the ppl. in WI are so nice and warm and we want to be part of it!

One more thing...I know this is alot...but... I have looked for places to rent around the areas listed above and only see condos..that is NOT what we are looking for...nothing busy and built up..
Kate

I'd look at Lake Mills. It's almost like the poster city for small town America- quaint, nice well kept older homes, residents take an active role in the community, etc. Good schools as well. Also as a plus, it's less than an hour long drive to both Madison and Milwaukee.

Oostburg would also be worth a look. A friend of mine lives there (married with 14 yo triplets) and says nothing but positives.

thanks for the post. That's where I'd like to move if I knew I could get a job right away. Get a season pass to noah's ark in the summer and enjoy all the parks and forests nearby the rest of the time.
