by far the friendliest place we have ever lived (and we get around).
We moved to Wausau about two weeks ago and have been in awe of how friendly people are. Our neighbors brought wine and flowers and have had us over to hang out every evening. Nearly everyone we have come in contact with has treated us like gold. We are so happy with our new "Hometown"

I'm glad you've had such a positive experience. Lots of people on this site like to complain about how if you're not originally from WI, then you'll never fit in here or be accepted by the community, which I think is a total crock.

Met a guy from Hudson through work today (small world... not only is it weird we're both from WI, it's weird we're both from the northwestern part). He was friendly the entire time. Obviously a happy soul. It was fun to talk to someone who knows my hometown and vice versa.

Congrats on you move and welcome to the area. If you have any questions about it, send me a private message. I've lived in the area my whole life (30+) yrs for all but 4 of them.

...like all states, friendly in some parts and not friendly in others.

That's Wisconsin!
People that aren't treated well usually have an attitude that motivates it.

Way I see it if you are open to new things and people Wisconsin can be great. Some people just do not like to try to get to know neighbors and such and that is why dislike it, that and weather.

Welcome to Wisconsin and enjoy all it has to offer. Being central part of state can do many things and only takes a couple hours to get anywhere.

I prefer to be left alone most of the time so friendliness to me is simply leaving me be to live my life without trying to rob me, harass me, etc... but yeah, I can see how up by Wausau, they would be more friendly then say down by Sheboygan or Milwaukee.

I´m Swedish, but my US girlfriend currently lives in the Appleton/Fox Valley area of Wisconsin.
My experience of that part of WI is:
1.Great and friendly people
2.One of the absolutely safest areas in the entire US, according to the latest statistics.
3.The Fox River Valley, Lake Winnebago and the entire eastern shore of Lake Winnebago along the Niagara Escarpment are all very beautiful places, but landscape-wise most of the Appleton area is, frankly, fairly bland and uninspiring, being on the whole quite flat.
4. The Fox Valley area is reasonably close to wonderful spots such as Door County, the Lake Michigan/Bay of Green Bay shores, the Wisconsin Northwoods, the Wisconsin River Valley, the Baraboo Hills, the Wausau area (very beautiful landscape) with Rib Mountain, the undulating Kettle Moraine area (with the Holy Hill Basilica) near Hartford, WI, and so many other lovely regions.
5. The Appleton downtown area is by and large beautifully preserved with a rather small-town feeling for such a relatively large city. However, most of downtown is now dominated by restaurants, coffee places, other kind of eateries, nightclubs and entertainment venues with fairly few specialist shops remaining in the College Avenue area and nearby. The last downtown Appleton bookstore - the venerable Conkey´s - closed down last year and most shops are now to be found in the outlying malls with the Fox River Mall in neighboring Grand Chute leading the way.
6. The cultural offerings in the Appleton/Fox Valley metro area are, by and large, fairly impressive considering the size of the place. The fact that Lawrence University is based in Appleton certainly makes a huge and positive difference for the city in a cultural context. There is also the great Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra with quite a smattering of concerts throughout the year with the exception of a summer break.
7. All this being said, my very favourite part of the state of Wisconsin is the area between the Mississippi River Valley in the west and the Wisconsin River Valley in the east, with its green and rolling hills and pretty little towns and villages in between. The Wausau area is also very attractive and centrally located state-wise.
8. I could say so much more about Wisconsin, but perhaps the most striking feature of the Badger State is its great and fascinating diversity landscape-wise. One never gets tired of exploring new parts of this friendly place, where I as a Scandinavian feels very much "at home" and which I love very dearly, and not just because my girlfriend hails from there!
