We are planning to stop at Wichita on the way to OKC in late March, and are looking for a good place to grab a bite to eat for lunch on our way through. We are going to be on I-35 as we pass through, and are looking for a good place to grab a bite to eat without having to go miles out of our way.

We're not wanting to break the bank, but don't want to hit the local Burger King or McDonald's. Any good places on that route we can stop to grab a good lunch?

Thank you!

Well, you did mention 2 national burger chains; neither of which pose any threat to Braums, which is adjacent to I-35 in Newton, & has short wait times. Perhaps someone local can reply with actual restaurants near I-35 within Wichita. I can't think of any just off I-35.

Braum's Ice Cream & Burger Restaurant @ 1209 E 1st St, Newton, KS 67114

It’s not fast food, but one of my favorite restaurants in Wichita was Pho Special. They are fairly quick and it’s awesome Vietnamese food.

I’m not sure if it’s just Wichita, but Bionic Burger is pretty good, the food reminds me of Sonic somewhat. They have a few locations and one isn’t too far from I-35.

Neither of those are right on the highway, but both are maybe within 5 minutes. You might check your gps. Mostly it’s only the big chains that can afford to be right near the on and off ramps.

Cinnamon's Deli might be a good choice. Town and Country is good for homestyle food.

I moved away from Wichita a few years ago (military move). I lived in Wichita for 9 years and I felt like Wichita was really lacking in unique eateries. I can think of a few but none are really close to the I-35 corridor. The Kellogg area is the area I'm most familiar with. With that said, you have a few options (all are reasonable priced...think Applebees prices or less):

Kellogg Exit (or within a mile or three):
Fusa (fusion cuisine)
Promise Thai (right next to Fusa)
Poblanos Mexican Grill (Chipotle-ish and next to Fusa)
Two Brothers BBQ (across the street from Fusa)
Chipotle
Freebirds World Burrito (also Chipotle-ish, a little further away but worth it)
Hog Wild BBQ (one of my preferred BBQ joints close to the base)
Alejandro's Mexican Food (Greasy spoon Mexican, pretty tasty burritos)
Meddys (middle eastern/greek-ish/Mediterranean, probably my favorite for lunch near base)
China Go Grill (good bang for your buck)
Fried Rice (a little seedy, $4 will get you some good fried rice, a side, and a pop. If you try to pay with anything other than cash, the dragon lady will probably jump over the counter and kill you)
Bagatelle Bakery (sandwiches/soups/quiche/beirocks/etc. Good eats, online menu)
Mediterranean Grill (Sit down, not fast food. Near Target by mall. Might be more than Applebees but it's good food)

Near the I-135 Exit:
Another Hog Wild
Bomber Burger (cash only. Allegedly one of the best burgers in Wichita, I only ate there once)

If you want to go out of your way:
La Monde Café (Best Mediterranean in Wichita in my opinion)
Lotus Leaf Café (Vegan. Don't get me wrong, I love meat and this place is pure grass eater but I've never left disappointed. Very tasty food if you can figure out what you want to order. Figuring out where to park can be an a$$ pain)

Well there you go...plenty of options that won't break the bank, aren't huge chains, and won't leave you walking away hungry. Post back on what you decided if you get the chance.
