Hi. My wife and I are planning to relocate to Asheville from the Charleston, SC area. She is a native, born and raised in Black Mountain, and would like to get closer to family. Of course we are curious about the job market. I am a tech writer/instructional designer/usability consultant (a dream job for me would be to work for Moog Music as a tech writer!). My wife has been working in financial aid at a couple of schools and is finishing up a Masters in Clinical Counseling. Anyone have any knowledge of the job market?
Another question is, of course, about real estate. How hard is it to rent out houses? We are thinking a plan of action would be to buy something there and rent it out until we find jobs. This past weekend we drove around West Asheville and saw several nice places.
You will have a very difficult time finding employment in Asheville, if you're looking for tech writing or tech jobs in general fitting your qualifications. There just are not those kinds of jobs here. The job market in Asheville is tourism/service/medical, for the most part, and pay is low compared to other North Carolina metro areas. I work for a software company and if I were to lose my job I would without a doubt have to move to find employment comparable to what I do now. Unfortunately, that's the way it is around here.
The Asheville Metro Area has fairly low unemployment, but career type occupational opportunities are rather limited due to the nature of the area, tourism, retail and retirement. Career type jobs that do not cater to those customer groups are very limited.
Does anyone have any knowledge of the rental market i.e. if one purchases a house and wants to rent it out for a bit prior to moving to Asheville? Thanks again.
