I moved to the Asheville area from Georgia 4 1/2 years ago. I live in the southeast part of the county, about 9 miles from downtown. Schools here seem pretty good, I have my son in the local elementary school. I am halfway between Asheville and Lake Lure. The area is beautiful, there are lots of homes not in subdivisions, but the other posters are right, housing is expensive, and rental homes are hard to come by. Asheville has about 70,000 residents so its a nice midsize city with 2 malls. Certain jobs are plentiful, such as tourism industry, some light manufacturing, and the medical field. The medical field is big here. But specialized things are harder to find. And the pay around here doesnt equate to the cost of living. You can thank the retirees and second home buyers for that. I do really like Asheville, and the downtown is very vibrant, but I would research your job field, and look for a house at least 10 miles from downtown to get a good buy. We bought a foreclosure and fixed it up but its in a great location near a library and school and on a dead end street so it worked out for us.
