We've seen the Ivy River. We've seen "Loves mountains" property just outside of Marshall. We've been to Marshall itself, a little town with a big future. We've stood in awe of those mountains. We've even had to "go" behind a tree(!) because the area is that remote and private and natural--and yet--yes--just a whisper away from Weaverville, with its own cute tiny town and all the necessities of life.

We think of you, Ed&Betty (and "Loves mountains" and "LiveLoveLaugh") as America's current generation of pioneers. You have a beautiful life in front of you, and one of the best things about it is that you appreciate and will protect the land you'll be part of. Congratulations and best wishes from the Parkies!

The link provided above refers a brand new development on a former cow pasture very near the river so anyone considering buying there should make sure they have all the information.
Ivy River near Marshall had a pretty major flood event as recent as 1995. Edit: the 2004 Hurricane Ivan figure is troublesome, too.

I've been here nine years, and have still never been out 25/70 to Marshall or Hot Springs. I've been to the new Buncombe County landfill, which I gather is just on the Buncombe side of the line out there. I've been up I-26 a few times, and been skiing at Wolf Laurel/Ridge twice.

Madison county, the great unknown. Thanks for shedding some light, you new residents! And to miokie, I hope this region never has to relive 2004 again. Home, businesses and lives were lost, and millions and millions in damage done. I'll never forget the image of Biltmore Village under water. I stood on the McDowell St. bridge and just stared. Mother Nature is awesome.

Cooper - I am surprised that you haven't explored Madison County! Take a drive up 25/70 and head west at Walnut and pick up Big Pine Road where it crosses the French Broad - there is some beautiful country there and some pretty wonderful people, too. If you head up towards Hot Springs stop at the Steady Eddy for a coffee - from their parking lot you can get on the Laurel River Trail - we are going to hike it for the first time this June - lots of wildflowers and a 1/4 mile stretch of some pretty sweet swimming holes. We can't wait to explore that whole area.

We've passed by it, will have to try it.
Also Momma's Country Kitchen on Marshall by-pass.....
good, cheap greasy spoon and long local history.
