After just living here for about a year it turns out that we need to replace our HVAC,the repair would cost around 1k but since the unit is a little over ten years old I'm afraid it might be better to replace it. We would need a 2 tonn unit and might consider a Goodman 14 SEER.
Since we are still relatively new to this area and don't know of any installers I just called a company in Hickory to check out the old unit and he told us that a new one would be anywhere from 3k to 5K in total.
Can anyone recommend a good installer in this area?
Thanks!
Suggest you put an ad on Craigslist under "skilled trade and services" - "Wanted licensed AC contractor to install New air handler and outdoor heat pump unit ( MUST BE LICENSED ) I will check."
Have them size up your situation and price a complete system. You can always ask them if they will install your units if you buy them online or elsewhere.
January is an excellent time to do this. They are somewhat hungry in Jan v. August.
I've used Mountain Air, White & Williams and McNutt.
The one I used the most for warranty repairs was W&Ws. They were good and only rarely did they need to come back for a second repair (it happens). McNutt was the most expensive but all were close to each other.
Mainly you need to get at least three bids all like for like and compare. The ones that are the most thorough will include heat load/loss calcs and will always pull permits and want everything to code. Having everything done right the first time is worth it especially if you go to sell.
P.S. - If you go with 14 SEER Goodman system make sure they add a thermostatic expansion device (TXV or TEV) to air handler so you can get another .5 - 1.0 SEER rating for the $100 part. It's well worth it. If they don't want to add that then drop them like a bad habit. It's a tell-tale sign they suck at what they do.
We had terrible experiences with Cannella. Even the folks who referred us to them at first, retracted later and confirmed: the guy who started the company might have had a good thing going but, he has lost control of his rude employees.
Even though we live in Connellys Springs, we went with Foothills out of Morganton. Very pleased.
I can think of a lot of things I'd post help wanted ads for but, HVAC is NOT one of them.
Angie's List (maybe) . . .

Thanks everyone for the helpful info,we ended up using Foothills as well and had the fan motor replaced today,he also checked the rest of the unit, all for a total of $336.
Glad you were able to fix it for a reasonable price. 10 years doesn't sound old for HVAC is it????
According to this link, even with no maintenance it should last between 10-18 years.Back in our previous house we had a contractor brand HVAC and it was still running great after 17 years. What is the Life Expectancy of My HVAC System? | Comfort Pro
It's not that they won't last 10 years or more, it has more to do with at 10 years or older warranties are gone and parts start getting expensive. Never mind the fact that the government will be making big changes every 10 years that increases those cost as well. It's up to you but if you have a repair 25 - 50% of the cost of a new system you will always get a sales pitch and you'll probably get the sales pitch even if the repair doesn't approach those percentages anyways.
