My apologies if this should be in one of the subforums rather than the main one. Never posted in the NC section before...
My friends and I are looking to drive up from FL and rent a cabin either during our winter break (mid December) or during early March (our spring break). I had a couple of questions I was hoping maybe some of you guys could answer, either from personal experience or hearing people who have done so.
1. Which time of year do you think would be best? We certainly won't mind the cold. In fact, we prefer it. But heavy snow would be an issue to get up to the cabin, as we don't have a 4x4 vehicle. Is the chance for heavy snow high in December? Would March be a safer bet?
2. Any recommendations of cabins? We've looked into a couple, so far this site is in the lead: Bryson City NC Cabin Rentals. North Carolina Cabin Rentals. Vacation Rentals in the Smoky Mountains They range from about $149-$219 during the months we planned to book. Is this an average price, or can we do better? One of their top cabins is $159 for a couple of nights and then jumps higher during the week we'd like to be up there.
I don't know if its relevant, but there's four of us, college students, and we'd like to stay 4-5 nights.
To be honest, I'm not really sure. Anything kind of near beautiful natural sites/mountains/trails/etc. would be fine for us. I haven't really done much looking into specific areas, as ignorant as this sounds, I kinda figured all the cabin type environments were pretty similar.
There have been a few recent threads about cabin rentals in WNC. You might start by doing a a search - go back to the Western North Carolina Sub-Forum, top right corner > Search This Forum and use cabin rentals as your search words.
As for 'when', it depends on 'where'/how high of elevation, and if some of the access road(s) are north facing, or OK.
Imo, that mid Dec time frame is usually not full on 'winter' here, even in the 4,000 - 5,000 ft elevations. The ground is still 'warm' enough to preclude most snows from sticking too long.
Mid March can be a different situ, again depending on elevation and location, but the past several years have brought serious early Spring to even the higher elevations.
None of the above holds if a severe cold snap/snow storm cranks through the area, but the Dec and March time frames probably offer a better shot than Jan/Feb.
If you are going to be down in the flats/'burbs/much lower altitude, I wouldn't worry about those dates, and even at 'elevation' my guess is it will not be ungettable.

Wolf Branch Cabin near Asheville is nice. There's also the Robertson House in Burnsville, 45 minutes from Asheville. Both are great spots.
