There are Ingles Markets throughout the area; am I understanding that you don't want to be within proximity of an Ingles? I don't understand .... their markets are located on main highways; you wouldn't be living on a main highway would you? or you just don't care for Ingles? There is a very nice Harris Teeter near downtown Hendersonville, as well as The Fresh Market which is undergoing an excellent expansion as we speak, and it is next door to my fave SteinMart.
This has been a record breaking spring as far as rain goes in the Hendersonville, Mills River (low lying land), general areas. Something like 10+ inches of rain last month. There is an article about it in this morning's Times News. www.blueridge.now Very unusual. This is not a problem rainfall area, that it definitely is not. If you want to be in Boone, prepare for a lot more snow and ice, a lot more traffic, and fairly far out there. I would not want to be isolated up in Boone; not even a reasonable distance from the AVL airport, or any airport for that matter, or an interstate.

The OP lived in Summit County, CO (home to Keystone, Breckinridge, Copper and A-Basin ski areas) for a number of years. I don't think the colder climate in the Boone area is an issue. Yes, US 321/Blowing Rock Rd in Boone is a PITA most days, but there are easy alternative routes in Boone to avoid it and a few other periodically congested areas.
Having grown up in Raleigh and previously lived in Winston-Salem and Greenville, SC, I don't feel the least bit isolated living in the NC High Country. Access to airports is not a priority for everyone. The roads I travel allow me to get where I need to go just fine.

To each his/her own.
Understand. But why are you telling me? I'm familiar with the Rockies, sis has a condo at Alta (outside Salt Lake City).
Totally different climate, atmosphere, altitutde and attitude in the Colorado Rockies than western NC. But I don't get the "Ingles" thing.

Okay, maybe this is because I've only ever needed to use airplanes a couple times in my life, but I really don't think that 2 hours to Charlotte or PTI is that unreasonable of a distance when you're going to then take a plane trip across the country or world.
Because of family members I experienced the 8 hour car trip between Winston-Salem and Cleveland 2-4 times a year for my entire childhood. A 2 hour drive doesn't really phase me.

PTI? do you mean GSP? (Greenville Spartanburg), a very nice small airport (under an hour from HVL). But you still need connections to many places from GSP or AVL. I've driven back and forth to CLT, that 2 hr. one way drive can be stressful if the weather is bad or simply rainy. Going through Shelby and Forest City: many traffic lights and a lot of traffic in the morning especially. If you come in to CLT at night, the drive "up the mountain" when you're tired is not fun. If you have to pick someone up at the airport, ugh.... a 4 hr. round trip. Not my cup of tea. So I've decided to spend a few extra $$ from now on and just lv. from AVL and use a connecting flight. One annoying fact has been with US Air out of AVL to CLT and the return. 9 out of 10 times US Air out of CLT has been delayed as much as 3 hrs. A few times the plane sat there w/o a crew. How annoying is that. The least amount of delay I recall was about 45 mins. and the US Air gates are at the very end of the C concourse at CLT. AVL or GSP are sooo easy in and out.
The OP asked about Boone. I don't think access to air travel from Hendersonville or Mills River is of concern since that's where the OP is already located. The whole question of air travel came up when QC described Boone as being isolated. That is what DSS and I have been trying to address.
No, I meant Piedmont-Triad International in Greensboro. A much easier drive than the one between Boone and Charlotte.
Ahh, very true, nice airport. (I didn't realize, or didn't remember, that the OP is in the Mills River area. ) There are a few other threads on here that maybe the oP has already investigated about the amenities and general observations of Boone. People usually make the right decision for their circumstances in the end.
My hat is off to Roadpony for a valiant effort, but unsuccessful, to keep this thread on track. I was away for a while and just got back. I DO NOT need further information on Boone but appreciate all I got. It would be a good idea for people who have an opinion to read the original entry before going off into left field. Mine was quite lengthy but in the spirit of being clear and helpful so worthy of reading. It will be interesting to look at this thread a in a few weeks to see whence it has gone.
