What is going on in Asheville with respect to crime rates? I just compared my neighborhood to various areas there (based on zip codes) and it seems no matter which section of the area I look at the stats are all very similar. Murders iin Asheville are at 130 (100 is National Average) compared to 38 in my area. Matter of fact comparing NC to VA it has much higher crime rates of all kinds both persnoal and property--don't you guys have police down there? Is this because the criminals are scattered liberally throughout the community instead of beign relegated to the other side fo the track type communities?

It doesn't say 130 murders/year, it scores each city's murder rate per capita, and uses 100 as the national average.
Still, Asheville's murder rate is pretty low (single digits per year, I'm sure). I don't think that's above the national average. The rate is not Manassas low, though. Being in DC-suburbia, that's probably one of the safest towns I've ever been in, and probably why NC's rates look so high in comparison.
EDIT: just compared Asheville to Alexandria, and AVL comes out pretty good...

Reason: add other comparison
Asheville has the highest percentage of people living in public housing projects of any city in NC. The primary occupation of these residents are either welfare leaches, or drug dealers. While we have the occasional murder derived from domestic violence, probably 75% or more are drug trade driven, typically a drug deal gone bad so the 'bros' pop a cap in someone butt.
And the city council wants to build more taxpayer supported housing projects for the drug dealers to inhabit. Even though the Mayor's brother was just arrested for dealing drugs, she apparently still fails to recognize the connection.
I grew up in Columbia SC and lived in DC for a year, I assure you Asheville is nothing to compare to either of these. Most murders are due to drugs, alcohol, and greed (with the occassional jealous spouse, usually under the influence of one of the previously mentioned vices). Besides if fear is what keeps people from moving to a new city or area, then you might as well board up the windows and never leave your home...or go outside and wave and smile at a stranger, either way living in fear is is not living.

Yep, just look at average household income in both cities . . . that pretty much explains it.

Another factor is that in Virginia if you do the crime you do the time--no early outs--Larry
