WVU started dropping hints last year about moving out of Beckley. That has quieted down for now but it disturbingly lingers in the background.

Glenville does just fine on it's own. Last thing they need is to be on the hook for overpriced coaches at WVU.

Glenville is doing decent. But is it benefitting the state to have it operate as an independent university? I don't know if it is or not, I'm just just asking the question for discussion purposes.

WV only has 1.7 million people. Is dividing it's resources up between 9 public universities worth it? Many state's with more people have fewer overall university systems. Not including state's with one system (ie: California), here's some examples.

New Hampshire (1.4 mil) = 4 public universities
Nebraska (1.9 mil) = 4
Idaho (1.9 mil) = 4
Kansas (2.9 mil) = 6
Iowa (3.2 mil) = 3
Oregon (4.2 mil) = 8
Kentucky (4.5 mil) = 8
South Carolina (5.3 mil) = 9

Those state's seem to be educating their population just fine with fewer overall systems. People might not like to hear this, but WVU is one of the biggest assets this state has. Marshall too! I am a huge fan of competition between institutions, but there comes a point where the market is saturated.

Also, WVU's athletic budget and academic budgets are unrelated to each other. The Athletic Dept. has actually made money, and therefore can afford to pay a coach what is completive for a Power 5 athletic program.

Average Power 5 football coach salary = $6.2 Million

Average Power 5 basketball coach salary = $2.5 - $3 million (rough estimate)

Glenville is having no budget issues over growing too big.

Not everyone does well under the nameless system that is WVU.

My daughter wanted to be a music teacher in the public school system. She visited WVU, Fairmont (dodged a bullet by not going there), Marshall and Glenville.

When the music professors at Glenville found out she was interested, one invited her to a football game to come sit with the band. The other actually attended one of her high school foot ball games to come see her perform. She wasn't going to get this kind of attention elsewhere.

We got to know both of them pretty well. They always made a attempt to say Hi whenever they saw us. Mark Manchin came over to talk to us on a few occasions at different events.

She is now an Elementary music school teacher at a local school.

She missed out on a few things like the travel with the band to events but she did get to go when the womens basketball team won their National Championship. Something she still talks about.

That’s great that your daughter found a place that she fit in well and thrived! I also prefer a smaller campus atmosphere and the personal interaction that a student can have with a professor.

I’m more referring to consolidation of administrative elements. The could still be a place for Glenville State, it would just be apart of a larger institution. Or maybe merge all the lower tier universities like Concord, Bluefield, Glenville, Fairmont, etc… They could collaborate better, not compete against themselves, and still provide quality educations to the people of WV and their respective regions.

WVU isn't showing great leadership in their administration process.

Glenville doesn't have a big overhead in that department. You get things too big and that's when things get out of control IMO.

President Manchin lives right there. He isn't known for throwing expensive parties on the students nickels. He attended nearly everything personally and was available to anyone that wanted to talk to him. I wonder how many students and parents even see Gee from a distance.
