A family discussion this last weekend revolved around the town of Summersville and Nicholas County.
Other than a few trips over the last ten years to the lake, we really do not know much about that area itself. A friend once told us that the police there were gentle on the locals and rough on the visitors, but that was over ten years ago. However, there is no doubt just how beautiful the whole area is from the lakes to mountains.
It wont be long before we retire and if it was just us to consider it would not matter, but it seems wherever we move, the whole family eventually relocates in the next 5 or 6 years. Because of that, there are small children to consider and our first thoughts turned to the school system in Nicholas County. We did some digging, nothing really horrible but nothing really good either. It all read just so-and-so and left us with a meh feeling.
Shopping looks ok and property values looked down right cheap even on the lake. It has been my experience that lake front property that does not fetch a premium means that there is something seriously wrong with an area. So, I am here asking those that know a lot more than I do.
Why should we consider Summersville? We currently live in South Hills of Charleston. What should we look out for?
Well, Nicholas County is flat broke right now due to severance tax losses. It hit the school system pretty hard too (though not as bad as Boone County, obviously). From the people that I know who lived in the area before, the schools were still pretty good, all things considered. And, like you said, property values are dirt cheap. It's a good place to retire, from my perspective; you have the lake, plenty of open space, enough shopping for what you need, and you're still within an hour and a half of Charleston, 45 min to Beckley, and 25 min to Fayetteville.
