My family was looking, and even made an offer on a place in the Canyon Isles development in West Boynton. Recently, after searching around on the internet a little more, I've actually found stories of the "chinese drywall" inside the development.

We would have to accept a much smaller home in Boca. Probably between 2300-2800 sq ft compared with 3400 in the Canyon development for the same money.

Has anyone here know anyone in the Canyons and has been/or knows of someone that has been affected?

Have you had it tested yet? Not all homes in the Isles have the drywall. Before you back out have it tested. The Springs/Lakes are not supposed to have as many cases of it, if any at all. Your realtor should be able to recommend someone or GL may even have it done for you. That is a great area though.(if it doesnt have the drywall...)

Hi I live in the Canyon Springs development. From what I have heard there has been no cases in Canyon Springs and few in the Isles and a few in the Lakes. It is my understanding that GL Homes would be fixing the drywall problems and paying for a house to live in while the house is under construction. Not 100% positive on that, but thats word on the street!

I live just south of this area in Delray. West Boynton is one of the hot spots for Chinese drywall in Palm Beach County due to the large amount of construction that took place during the housing boom (2003-2006). The prices per sq. ft. in this area are way below other areas and almost too good to be true. I feel the chinese drywall problem will turn out to be much larger that anyone expects. Keep in mind that if one house in a development turns up with this problem the whole development will suffer.

As others mentioned, don't just back of house because it 'may' have a dry wall issue. Just get the property inspected and you should be find. Canyon Lakes is a good community and GL is still in business!

how does one go about having this inspected? i have seen several rentals that were remodeled in the last five-ten years with all new walls and have wondered how to test them.

The best way to get this inspected would be to hire a professional inspector.

I am not sure if you have or are planing to have kids but have you looked at the school districts if so? How big is your family and are you guys going to be just too cramped in a small home vs large? I know a lady due to finances who moved there from Boca and she really likes it. I don't know about the walls issue but usually when one buys they have a home inspector for all issues around the house. For rentals I guess you could do the same but not sure how much that would cost.

I am not worried about the Chinese Dry wall. My wife and I went to see the model homes at Canyon Springs and we loved them. But we also love living in Boca. Currently we rent in East Boca but would look for a home in west. We also know we get alot more house for our hard earned dollars in Canyons plus it would be either a brand new spec house or built to our liking.
We are torn on where we want to buy our first home but I know we cannot go wrong with either choice in reality. That actually makes the debating alot of fun.

Given that what are your opinions based on the above info?
