New golf league backed by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy to build Inaugural Home at Palm Beach State College

"A sports business co-founded by two Palm Beach County-based PGA Tour members is partnering with Palm Beach State College to build a venue for their new high-tech golf league.

TMRW Sports, co-founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, announced plans Tuesday to construct a facility on the Palm Beach Gardens campus of Palm Beach State College that will serve as the inaugural home of the upstart TGL golf league.

"It's going to be the most technologically advanced golf production," Tom Veit, senior vice president of venue and events for TMRW Sports, said. "It's a combining of virtual and real world of golf with the top PGA Tour golfers."

Palm Beach State College recently signed off on the agreement to transform the 10-acre parcel of currently unused land into the future home of TGL, which is expected to begin play in 2024.

"As a part of our partnership, that means we will be expanding our IT programming and our IT security programming, expanding our innovation programming as it relates to IT," Dr. Ava Parker, president of Palm Beach State College, said. "Because of all the cool forward things they will do as part of this engagement."

The venue will host TGL, in addition to offering paid internships and part-time jobs for Palm Beach State College students and graduates, according to a news release.

TGL's inaugural season is slated for January 2024 with a 15-match regular season, followed by the playoffs and a championship match. The league will launch with six teams, each consisting of three PGA Tour golfers, playing on Monday nights. Woods and McIlroy have already committed to play.

Construction is expected to begin in 2023."

That's great..............but golf is not a high paying job for most players. If Tiger formed a "automotive technician school" it would lead to jobs that kids would be able to make a living from for decades. The "dream golf academy" will certainly attract players that could be on the cusp but it will probably attract hundreds more attempting to live the dream which will result in a dismal 10+ yr career doing fringe golf jobs before the fantasy hits the reality they won't be "making it!"

Case in point: I played golf with a guy that was in his 30's a few weeks ago. He was a good player, but as the scorecard showed he wasn't anywhere near a scratch player. In the end, I was scoring lower. Golf is a hobby, I'll play 40 rounds a year tops. This guy was playing 3-4 rounds a week.

This guy was a caddy at two high end clubs, he traveled with the seasons (north in summer, south in winter). He was essentially living out of his car, renting places seasonally. This is not going to be a career for him, this temporary gig is crushing his future, no retirement accruing, no home equity growing while he is grinding out a living. Fun job, sure but a job with a future no. If he was 22, I'd tell him to enjoy himself but at mid-30's he is reaching the point where he might not be able to recover. Even after spending 4 hours with him, I still had no clear picture of what he was trying to do with his "golf career."

I worry that Tiger's golf academy will spool up student loan debts for kids that are fringe players and don't know where to draw the line between fantasy and career. Florida is FULL of scratch golfers that are playing as a hobby then you have tons more that are trying to make it professionally. Any good high school player will attend a good college program, Brooks Koepka played for Florida State University, Tiger played at Stanford. PBSC is essentially an up rated community college (it was PB junior college then PB community college for decades).

I hope the people running the program capitalize on Tiger/Rory's influence but have specific goals in mind that will give kids the skills needed to start lifelong well paying careers.

As a side note, both Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman live within 3 miles of this campus. Jack literally drives by it any day he goes to the interstate. Odd that these two 30-40 yr residents of the area never came up with a school opportunity like this.
