You really need to drive around and look for "For Rent" signs to find the cheaper units.
The corporate run complexes are expensive.

Rental Complexes here, at least the big Corporate ones, have varying rents, the cheapest are the 1st floors and go fast, not just for the cost, older people cannot often take stairs well. They up charge for each floor with the highest being the most expensive, lakeside or courtyard view, also has a premium tacked on to it.

Also expect the rent to go up each year.

And rents just going up and up, places that were 1700 a month are now 2200 a month. Ridiculous, I hope I move to sw Florida so I can have low rent

I used to live in SW Florida, Cape Coral to be exact. Yes, houses with gulf access can be had for $160k or so, and in good condition. Just not a location I wanted to live in before age 50.

I've always used Craigslist. I rented a place in the Cape for $440 a month, all utilities included and internet. Had 1 roommate, was a good situation. I've since relocated to Charlotte, NC., and am renting for $750 with everything. If I went the old apartment way in Charlotte, I'd be looking at a good $1,000/month, and that's without utilities.

I hope my next move will be into a house because, yes, rents now are the equivalent of a mortgage.

Glad to hear everything worked our for you

I find myself worrying about younger people who move here not understanding the high cost to rent.

Best of luck!

Craigslist has been my savior in terms of renting. You have to wade through a lot of crap but it's worth it.
