We have just discovered that a yard-long iguana is hanging out by our pool. Removing foliage and other steps to discourage it from hanging around are not an option. I have read online that, by law, they can't be relocated.

I didn't think it was a problem, but now it is pooping in the pool. It runs away when we let the dog out, but since we are gone during the day, it has a lot of time to lounge around the deck. It jumped in the pool once when the dog was let out and we scooped it out with the pool skimmer, so I think we could catch it the next time that happens. But what do we do with it once we have it?

I can't stand the thought of freezing it and chopping off its head, something I read on the IFAS website. Help!

ENY-714/IN528: Dealing with Iguanas in the South Florida Landscape

This says you can trap them but not release.

Euthanasia by a humane method is allowed.

I've seen Iguana's when I was in Florida. It was hiding it a bush and it startled me. I didn't know they are problems, since I only thought Alligators seem to be issues there. Perhaps, get a dog crate or something similar to trap it humanely.

The problem is what to do with it once it's trapped. They can't be released and the "humane" way of killing it is to have it put to sleep, tranquilize it and cut off the head or freeze it till it's dead. I was hoping to hear that there was a better option. I guess zoos don't want them.

I hung one of those fake owls out near the steps (where it's been pooping). My son thinks that once the water gets cold it will stay away. I don't mind it sunning on the deck, but the other is just gross.

Thanks for the ideas.

They are more of a problem in certain areas, not everywhere here. The worst thing about them is the feces may contain salmonella, if they crawl on your BBQ pit or area, well use your imagination.

I was reading that in some areas, if you get rid of one another comes along to replace it. This article talks of long term solutions to making your place undesirable to the Iguana. Might be a better approach. Then maybe he will just find another space instead of yours. Good Luck.
