Is it true that the Boynton Beach Mall will become an outlet mall? Do you think that will be an improvement? Will it be better for Boynton Beach overall?

No. The old Palm Beach Mall is turning into an outlet mall. And yes, THAT is a definite improvement for the mall and the area. JC Penney will also stay as is. If they clean it up and ensure security, it should be a great asset to the area, since the other closest outlets are Sawgrass in western Broward, or Vero Beach.

The PBL business corridor benefitted from the redone Target, which is a great place to shop. City Furniture is also going to expand on Palm Beach Lakes Blvd., which is going to improve the area further.

Yes, the Boynton Beach mall is distinct from the Palm Beach mall.

The Palm Beach mall, not the Boynton mall, is becoming an outlet mall.

Do you know when the Palm Beach mall will become an outlet mall ?

We are planning to shop (till you drop) at Sawgrass Mills but wouldn't mind another outlet mall closer to WPB.

Default Boynton Beach Mall becoming an outlet mall

Some co-workers told me they read in the newspaper that the Boynton Beach mall was going to turn into an outlet mall. That might be good as it will differentiate itself from the other malls in the area.

Palm Beach mall has a proposal floating around to turn it into an outlet mall. The place was developed until the hood rats came in a destroyed the place, now trying to build on top of the ashes. But the outlet mall will still face the same problems as before unless something is done about the hood rat problem.

Article about the re-development:

Palm Beach Mall to be renovated as Palm Beach Fashion Outlets, New England Development announced

Just ten years ago the Palm Beach Mall was a very decent, thriving mall. When Wellington Green and Cityplace was built, however, it drove a lot of traffic away from the mall to those other locales. At the same time, the tenant mix at the Palm Beach Mall started to change... stores that catered to a... different demographic... moved in. Off brand stores, catering to "urban fashion" were common, cheap gold jewelry, etc. At the same time there was mismanagement by Simon Malls, who LET the mall die because they thought THEY were going to "redevelop" or sell the mall.... then they went into foreclosure.

The mall could not sustain itself, and it died. The fact is a lot of people are scared of being around too many black people. Fear of crime - substantiated or not, fair or not. Some people just don't like to be around minorities. Especially minority teenagers. Read any comments section of a PalmBeachPost story that has almost anything to do with downtown development.

The location of the mall is in a commercial corridor with some major box stores - Target, BrandSmart, BestBuy, Home Depot, etc. Going east from the mall there are a couple blocks of tall office buildings, a country club, a huge Jehova's Witness convention center.... and then a mile or so from the mall you cross a tiny bridge and you are in a part of town that most people do not like going into. THAT is the source of most people's fears about the property.

In the end, though, it really is all about the mix of tenants in the new outlet mall, and the patrons they will attract, that will dictate the success of the mall. In the 1990s the crime was 2X worse in the city than it is now, yet the old mall thrived. JC Penney and a music store are the only things left of the old mall today, and we don't hear of any problems as far as crime or anything like that. They are middle class stores.
