I have always taken an interest in watching clouds. Predicting what weather will come from them, watching them develop, move, transform, whatever... They are just a lot of fun to look at.
This (first photo)is common afternoon cloud here for 5-6 months. I like it because it signifies settled weather, and a warm night (relatively speaking). The second cloud means heavy rain is coming soon.

Funny, if I saw a sky like the first photo in the southeast US, I would expect heavy rain is imminent.

The first photo is just typical convection, and may have isolated heavy showers, but they seldom extend over the coastal plains. The second photo is pre warm front cloud, and it's pretty safe to say that it will be raining within about 12 hours.
