MELBOURNE, Australia — Southern Australia suffered Friday from a record-breaking heat wave that has threatened rural towns with wildfires and sent ambulance crews after heat-stressed patients.

Melbourne, Australia's second-largest city recorded its third consecutive day of temperatures above 109 degrees for the first time since 1855, when record-keeping began, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

Just what they don't need after sweltering through the hottest week in 101 years when temperatures exceeded 40oC on 6 consecutive days.

I'm enjoying these warm days before the wintry doom that will descend upon us come Monday.

Yes, it certainly has had a dreadful impact on people's health.

The state sanctioned selective brown outs haven't helped too many of the sick and elderly either, all to keep the shopping centres booming and the tennis still going. Too expensive a price to pay really.

Hope everyone is keeping an eye out for their elderly and sick neighbours.

Why would trees fall down in a heat wave?
Have any Americans seen this before?

those are the European elms that are planted here. The native Eucalyptus trees are in good shape.

Because they are suffering much stress from the extreme heat and lack of rain & are also dropping leaves even though it's still summer. Goes to show how unused they are to the conditions of late.

At the expense of people & trees/plants & animals dying? You obviously are in the minority. Plenty of us are so over the heat and lack of rain. Bring on the cooler and rainy, if any is actually coming, weather!
