Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Grand Forks ND
333 PM CDT Thu Oct 10 2019
Looking ahead into tonight, the regional radar shows a good slug
of precipitation working up from eastern South Dakota up into the
Red River Valley. The radars are probably bright banding in
places, but at the NWS in Grand Forks there have been bouts of
heavier rain at times. Where low level temperatures are colder, or
across the Cooperstown to Devils Lake to Langdon region, echoes
are weaker. Models show this slug of precipitation working
northward tonight, with the Devils Lake region staying on the
lighter side of these echoes. So for impacts tonight, the worst of
it will be from Cooperstown to Devils Lake to Langdon/Cando.
However, not expecting these conditions to be as bad as Friday
into Saturday. For the Red River Valley, expect the rain to change
to snow. There will be some huge gradients in snow across portions
of the Red River Valley. All said, will continue the winter storm
warning for areas along and west of the Red River Valley tonight.
Stronger winds and a secondary batch of snow is expected on Friday into at least early Saturday. This combination is expected to be crippling, especially for that Cooperstown to Devils Lake to
Langdon corridor. For that reason, a blizzard warning was issued
for this time frame. Impacts are hard to imagine, as these type of snow amounts and winds are incredibly rare. Have mentioned 1 to 3 feet of snow being possible in the blizzard warning area, with large, impassable drifts expected as well. This will not be an
event where a uniform amount of snow is deposited, and is easily
measured. Just like any blizzard, there may be little snow in open
areas, and huge drifts nearby. Impacts should be a little less in
the Red River Valley, and even lower moving east of the Red River
Valley into Minnesota. Since the area east of the Red River
Valley may not see snow until Friday morning, left the watch in
effect for now.
We got the Blizzard warning already, but it's not supposed to be blizzardy till 10am tmrw.
It is, however, becoming hard to breathe if you are walking against the wind and despite my Husky hauling me, still had to lean against the wind a bit. But I don't think it's more than 30mph now.
So far, about 8 inches, but it's snowing heavily now.
My Husky loves this weather. This is why I moved here

More of this, please
Any pics? Did you move? Last winter you were in Montana. Do you post in your state forum, just curious.

But the wind picked up. I actually got halted by gusts few times. When going back, I was - in the direction of the wind, almost floating
Given the ultra high temperatures (it's around 28 F), this is what I call a Tropical Blizzard, as even with wind chill, it's not even sub zero.
It's like a fake blizzard (there's no "thousand needles effect"), but I am not complaining as last winter was very uneventful, and this is stronger than I had in MT last winter.
Plus, there's still few months left of the winter
Perhaps we'll get some proper cold air tomorrow?
I'm about 70 miles north west of Grand Forks, at the edge of the region with supposed highest accumulation, but let's wait and see if that actually happens as it sure does not look like that now...
Windy too, blizzzard conditions expected. Lots of tree branches falling off because leaves still on trees.
Not good. About two weeks ago, there was such a strong wind that every other house had large branches broken off.
Electricity was down for few hours as an electric pole burnt.
Snow will only make this worse. It's not all fun and games...
