High school for me started at 7:30 AM, and lasted until 2:40 PM. Terrible hours IMO. Too tired to really function well in the morning and you get out of school during the hottest part of the day.
My HS started at 7:25 and ended at 13:55. Yeah it sucked and there were a few times I paid for it.
The start times at my high school varied because the school was so large (4,000 students), and you had the option to change it if you wanted. I believe it went 7:20, 8:10, & 9:00. I usually started at 9:00, they always tried to give me a 7:20 start time, but due to a 1.5 hour commute (one way) that just wasn't feasible, although I would've loved to get out early.
I tried 7:20 for one semester and I was always late, half of the time I'd miss my first class completely.
