January 2014 in Bingley (54N 2W)

The official figure will be slightly different because of the different recording period, but this is more or less it. Rain every day for the first time ever is the biggest story of this month, with a total of 172 mm, also we had the fewest sub-zeroes ever recorded for a January at just the one. Another record was the 68 cm of snow recorded on the 12th, which beats the 48 cm we recorded in 1991 and is extra impressive considering the complete lack of recorded snowfall around that date. Bingley doesn't record sunshine and the Bradford figure won't be available for another couple of weeks, but I would estimate around 30 hours. If any day had more than about 50% sun then I sure as hell don't remember it!

I'm too lazy to tot up all those numbers, but judging by other sites in the region we'll be about 1C above average. The lack of proper cold is a continuing theme this winter everywhere in the country. Only once has nowhere in the UK gone below -10C in a winter, and that was in 1989-1990 when the lowest temperature anywhere got was -8.4C. The lowest temperature this season as far as I am aware is the -8.1C at Braemar back in November.

Not quite over yet, but it's not going to change now... been waiting to post this

Average high: 37 °F / 3 °C
Daily average: 27 °F / -3 °C
Average low: 16 °F / -9 °C
Highest max: 59 °F / 15 °C (6th)
Highest min: 51 °F / 11 °C (11th)
Lowest max: 12 °F / -11 °C (7th)
Lowest min: -7 °F / -22 °C (30th)

2 major snowstorms, 8 snowy days in total, 6 separate occasions of accumulating snow. On the whole, a fantastic winter month. Snow cover from January 2 to 6 (5 days), and from January 21 to the current date (11 days, for a total 16 out of 31 days of snow cover). 3 below 0F temperatures recorded, 7 in the single digits, 5 days where it didn't go above 19F.

Lol at the 30/-6 day and then the high of 59 followed by the high of 12! Your average diurnal range is almost the same as our entire monthly range, which shows how boring our climate is.

The month isn't over in my part of the world but the official weather station here in Corvallis (OR), assigns todays date to yesterday's weather. I have no idea why.

Average Max; 47.3, 0.3 above standard (8.5, 0.1)
Average Min; 33.5, 0.5 below standard (0.8, 0.2)
We spiked a 58 (14.4) yesterday and dipped to 21 (-6 and some) on the 6th. Pretty much a plain vanilla month in terms of temperature.

This was our twelfth of thirteen months of below average rainfall and the fourth in a row. Hyslop Field measured 2.82" (or 71.6 mm), nearly 3.5" (90) below average. After finishing 2013 as the fourth driest in 125 years, we got about 44% of what we should get this month. We scored an even three inches at my place. We finally shook off our persistent and anomalous high pressure system on the 27th. It doesn't look like it has any intention of returning anytime soon so I believe we will return to our normally wet weather pattern. We had some dandy precipitation amounts in the mountains both east and west of us but, unfortunately, most of that fell as rain. Crater Lake picked up about a foot of snow but has only 18 (~45.7 cm) inches of base as opposed to the 93 (235) they normally see so we still have a ways to go. But at least our drought won't be getting any worse and I think might be broken.

Wish I could say the same for California.

That high temperature was actually recorded in the early morning hours of the 6th. I was shocked because when I went to bed on the 5th there was still a pretty solid snow cover. And when I woke up it was almost all gone excepts for a few piles here and there. You don't see that too often. The 7th would have been more interesting, and perhaps even colder, if we had had enough snow on the ground.

That station data in NJ is VERY similar to Danbury in CT. You must be at a higher elevation there then.
The only thing that stands out is the Highest Minimum. Are you sure it was 51F?

Danbury, CT (DXR) SouthWestern CT

Average high: 32.5 °F / -0.2 °C
Daily average: 23.2 °F / -4.8 °C
Average low: 13.9 °F / -10 °C
Highest max: 58 °F / 14.4 °C (11th)
Highest min: 33 °F / 0.5 °C (11th)
Lowest max: 10 °F / -12.2 °C (22nd)
Lowest min: -7 °F / -21.6 °C (4th)

I'll grab BDR and my own once today is included.

I'll post DCA, and possibly IAD, summaries as soon as the NWS Daily Climate Reports for today are released around 00:30 tonight. PIT during the day tomorrow since NWS Pittsburgh waits until 02:00 daily to post them.

Considering he considers himself to be residing in southern NJ, the only possible (I don't have an account to wherever he was posting his screenshot to) explanation is the Pine Barrens (sandy soil which depresses lows) location. That's why they are Hardiness Zone 6b for 1976 to 2005 and the rest of southern NJ is 7a or 7b.

Nope, not at a higher elevation. There aren't really any significant elevation changes in South Jersey. It's entirely on the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The station I used is located in Franklin Township, Gloucester County, NJ, and I believe soil composition is a factor, as Qilin34 mentioned, although it is not in the Pine Barrens, but close. There is also little or no UHI effect. The hardiness zone is 7a USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. Snow cover probably helps with the lows, as well. All the times it dipped below 0 we had snow cover.

It looks like it was indeed in the 50s all day on the 11th from looking at the daily history with many periodic observations. History : Weather Underground
