And what were their (at least estimated) temperatures?

The best time to swim in the local water holes / swampy ponds / narrow creeks here is actually at the very beginning of the season, right after the ice has melted, as that is the very narrow window in which you have a swimmable body of water yet do not have the disturbance of a million mosquitoes and other annoyances. Here's me swimming in a "duck pond" on April 12th:

I would estimate the water temperature to be near 50F/10C.

As far as lakes go, the earliest I ever remember swimming in one locally was late May, and then it was uncomfortably cold. Lake Superior is best swam in in August, and perhaps early September. I went swimming off the boardwalk just recently (on 9/24) and the water temperature was quite comfortable and easy to accustom oneself to (around 59F/15C) with the air temperature slightly above it:

I once tried to swim in Lake Superior on an exceptionally warm October day in 2011 but the water temperature was not cooperative (however, I did wade in it).

We can swim any time of the year because it maxes out at 14 or 15c in the summer so its cold all year.

Probably September for swimming in the sea. Bournemouth beach will still be around 18 or 19C. The quarry near here was around 25C in July so on warm days, possibly late September? I'm not a fan of cold water so I'm sure people can withstand the sea or quarry in oct/nov on decent days.

Not sure about latest, probably September sometime. Earliest would definitely be mid march last year, a few days after the ice went out it was in the 80s, summer temps, so I went to swim in a lake with some friends. Water temp was probably a few degrees above freezing, I just jumped in and went right back out to warm up again.

I don't think ever before mid June, and as late as early October. I really can't stand chilly water.

I must say, you are the last person I would have expected to hear that from. How was it?

latest I've swum here in the ocean was during the week in between christmas and new years, I've swum during that time period twice. The first was several years ago when I was still a kid, during an unusually warm winter so the water temps was a surprisingly pleasant 80f in the bay. The 2nd time was last winter where once again above average temps caused the water to be warmer than usual but this time since I was swimming on the ocean side it was colder than I would have liked, the ocean temp was 75f. the earliest I've gone in the ocean is early april unfortunately the day I went it was cool and the water hadn't warmed up yet so after dipping my toes into the 74f water I promptly went back out and spent the rest of the day building sand castles.

Very cold. I basically ran into the water dunked my body under and then quickly ran back out. I did it because of a bet. A friend of mine who also knows how much I like warm weather bet me $100 that I wouldn't do it. So I said I would and he watched me do it. I made myself $100 richer that day
