Deep freeze across Russia dips to 50 below, at least 45 die - World News

Russia is usually in winter but this is abnormally cold even for Russia. 270 people have been hospitalized, more than half of them due to frostbite. Crazy. Cold weather is no joke.

Novosibirsk has been very cold this month. Normal averages for December are 13.8F/0.5F but December 2012's average high and low are -11F/-24F.

I think I'd have a hard time surviving those temps too.. brrr...

I wonder if that bitterly cold air will migrate into Western Europe in the new year

Probably more likely to head down across Canada onto us than Western Europe. It seems more difficult for nature to move cold air east to west at the latitude of Europe. It does happen, but happens to us here much more often.

Northeast China has been very cold recently as well.
Many places got -40 C or lower. But still normal range.

I doubt somehow that cold will migrate from West russia to Philadelphia. Thats quite a distance.

I'm sure some of the cold weather fans in Europe here on this forum would have wished for that high pressure to migrate westwards instead of eastwards
