Well the weather service is one of the most important institutions of our country. Prime terrorist target. Assuming a terrorist is as much of a weather junkie as me...
I think I read the topic in P&OC that the article came from a dubious source and it was a mistake. The NOAA's Fish and Wildlife Service or whatever it's called was supposed to have been the recipient of the ammo, not the NWS
All of this is a very good and perplexing question, and I'm also trying to figure out why Homeland Security is purchasing more than a billion hollow-point bullets. As for the source, although it's not a rock-solid news site, at least the DHS story is well-sourced, the order was posted on the government's own website, and the DHS ammunition order has been confirmed by the company that has been given the contract, so it's real.
However, I don't think this sort of discussion doesn't belong in the weather forum, and I'd advise the moderators to move this topic.
Americans just love blowing foreign people up but when given a "good" excuse..after they let someone else make the first move. We all know that.
The puzzle is that the military is almost exclusively what they use to blow up foreigners, not Homeland Security and certainly not weather or fishing agencies. Even if they were a non-aggressive government, the purchase of a billion bullets by the military wouldn't be suspicious or surprising. Bullets are used up fast in wartime, regardless of who's the aggressor, and it's best to be prepared.
Just jesting that's all. But still what exactly does the NWS need with loads of ammo if not to dissipate supercells and hurricanes. I hope they're planning to use it for some humanitarian reason.
Now the Social Security Administration is set to purchase 174,000 rounds of hollow point bullets that will be delivered to 41 locations across the country.
