Over the year?
I recall a similar thread on this. There are stations in the Western half of the US where some months have an average diurnal swing of over 20C. This is very big, I don't see it much anywhere else in the world. Even in Australia I'm not sure if any station exceeds this. Wyoming and Nevada are just two states. Even Canoga Park, in the west part of the San Fernando Valley. Also check out the Central valley and highland stations in the Sierras.
The thread title says daily, not annual. What was that place in California where even in the summer highs would be in the 70s, but lows close to freezing?
You're referring to Bodie, perhaps, a ghost town now though.
If you read Bodie's average highs as average lows, and record highs as average highs (like I just did) it looks like a normal city in Texas or Northern Florida
For summer, the mountains of Northern California seem to have the highest range. The elevation seem to cool the lows much more the highs, which are to places inland at sea level. The hot, dry air allows the days to warm rapidly. There might be some influx of marine air that cools a bit from altitude at night, but the nights are clear and dry, allowing for rapid cooling.
