Hi, I am planning to move back to Portland and have decided to probably relocate to Gresham/Troutdale area. I have hiked some areas in the Columbia Gorge in the past, such as Eagle Creek through Tunnel Falls, etc, as well as many other trails. However, I have never really hiked anywhere in the Washington side. The one thing I don't like about the Oregon side is it is pretty crowded in the summer time. I know there are many parts of the Gorge you can escape everyone and still have lovely scenery and views. I was wondering what people thought about the Washington side? Is there good trails, views and other scenery around there? Is it less crowded than the Oregon side? I would assume it is due to the lack of waterfalls. The Washington side looks beautiful, butI think it would be really nice to hike and have Mt Hood in the backdrop.

So, overall, which side of the Gorge do you prefer to spend your days? Washington Or Oregon?

Most people I know live on the WA side... a few live in Portland's Pearl district.

Benefits to both sides... the biggest one seems to be no State Income Tax in WA if that is a factor... maybe that's part of the reason Bill Gates lives in WA?

I live westside Gorge, WA
20 min from PDX, 5 min from Cape Horn (newest trail) Cape Horn Loop Hike The Columbia River - Cape Horn, Washington

I definately can't handle OR politics, regulations, anti-business, anti-school policies (and polarized people). I have many friends there and do Economic Development work on both sides of west gorge, so I just learn to 'get-along'. Skamaniacs (residents / enforcers of Skamania County) are not the ez'st bunch to deal with either, but I will stay north if I can figure out how to pay my property taxes.

OR hiking is much 'cooler' in the heat of the summer, WA has better 'Vistas'. Anything within 1 hr to Portland is fairly crowded on weekends, but if you live here you will not be in the crowds.
