I may be considering the Tacoma area, and am interested in hearing about the current job outlook. I am in the legal field, but not interested in the big firm lifestyle, more interested in a smaller firm or a public agency or state position.

I am in a state which seems far more hard-hit by the economic situation, so I doubt it can be worse than my current outlook.

Also- in general, how are the public schools in the suburbs (Lakewood, Gig Harbor)? No kids yet, but looking to down the road.

Lakewood schools have a tough reputation. Gig Harbor schools (http://gigharborundressed.neighborhoodsundressed.com/2009/01/21/supporting-great-schools-in-gig-harbor/ - broken link)tend to be rated among the state's best. A client of mine recently opened a firm with 2 partners in Tacoma (not sure if/when they'd look to hire) and he's moving to Gig Harbor.
I don't know much about the legal field other than what his situation is. He moved from a smaller firm to build his own.
My feedback has been that Tacoma Schools tend to be better than Lakewood (Clover Park School District). Gig Harbor or University Place (closer to Tacoma) would be the areas I'd focus on, but I think you'll find good and bad schools in any district.

I would look at University Place, Gig Harbor or Steilacom. North Tacoma (Procotor area!! ) and Brown's Point are also nice, but I'm not familiar with the schools in those areas. Good luck with your move!

Both University Place and Steilacoom have great schools, so I definitely agree with Prple! I like Steilacoom more though UP (not to be confused with Seattle's University District/Village, which is a good 45 mins away! ) is slightly more highly-rated on Greatschools.net.

Hope that helps! And hey, you're my first post!
