We went for a walk along the Columbia River today and enjoyed some California poppies blooming along the shore. Who says poppies don't grow in WA?

One thing for readers to understand from this thread is that WA is a big state and some posters are at the southern end of the state, practically in Oregon, and others up north closer to Canada. Others are out in the rain forest on the Olympic Peninsula where it rains more, and some in the rain shadow near Sequim. Some are in the convergence zone around Lynnwood/Everett which is more gray/cloudy, as is Bellingham/Skagit Valley away from Anacortes. The weather patterns are very different. It can also be ten degrees cooler up in Bellingham or out in Monroe near the mountains.

True fact!

Here in Rochester we have a nice day today. Very interesting alto cumulus clouds above the eagle trees!

Yes, and its interesting to watch those differences unfold throughout the year during the various seasons. We've actually shared some of those differences in this thread which can be reviewed by those considering climate.

In addition to the areas mentioned, there is also east of the Cascades where they have unique microclimates all their own from TriCities to Spokane to Wenatchee, Leavenworth, up into the mountains themselves and many more. It's a state with a lot of climactic diversity.

We get several different types of weather within a 30 mile radius of us.

We definitely do in Vancouver. Because we have direct access to the Columbia River, we can literally drive from the rain to the sun and blue skies out east. You can watch the landscapes change also from lush forests to more of a desert type climate. Hood River and White Salmon are only ~ an hour away and quite different. Just this weekend, I drove from the rain to this for a hike after dinner and then back into the rain coming home.

I think this is how it works in a region that is coastal, and goes from 0 to 14,000 feet.

Proximity to the water tends to moderate the temperatures, proximity to mountains tends to funnel and divert airflow.

Right now we are at 69 degrees.
No real wind at ground elevation.
Up high the clouds are whipping.
Blue sky’s on one side bouncing clouds on the other.
This is a terrible pic but it’s interesting.
It’s less that 10 miles from my back deck as the crow fly’s.
These snow caps (we have 2 we see most of the year) have glaciers in their valleys.
Being able to have glaciers close by is cool

Yes, I've visited and hiked those peaks in ONP right behind you. There are some amazing views from up there all the way across to Canada.

I decided to head out for an after dinner session at Lake Merwin. Her beauty never disappoints. I couldn't believe these teens who went for a swim. They looked really cold! The water is in the low 50s still while the air was in the 70s. I also got to see an eagle was perched on a log watching me as I paddled by. All in all, it was a beautiful, peaceful evening gliding on the glass.
