What is the best way to get over all of the mountains and into Colorado?

I am terrified of heights and need to find the way with the least amount of driving next to drop-offs...luckily I will not be driving in the winter, it will be within the next two weeks.

I-90 is the biggest widest freeway, and wherever there are bridges or dropoffs, there are solid jersey barriers so you aren't peering over them. The other smaller highways to the north and south are much more winding and 'scenic', meaning the potential for scenic vistas, otherwise known as dropoffs.

I don't care for dropoffs either. (Stay away from Chinook Pass near Mt. Rainier!)

The two freeway routes are pretty safe feeling. I-90 to I-25 is slightly longer, but has only one dropoff area, Lookout Pass near the Montana border, but it isn't bad and not very long.

I-90 to I-82 to I-84 to I-25 is somewhat shorter, and has a couple of moderate dropoffs, namely in NE Oregon over Deadman Pass. Don't let the name fool you, it is not very terrifying.

Eastern CO ? / Denver? / Colorado Springs?

ONE 'baby' pass (Oregon).
I-5 to I-84 (portland) to I-80 (SLC / Ogden) to US 287 (Laramie > Ft Collins)

done it many times, never an issue (except trucks drive FAST in WY, and winter brings ice and wind... but trucks still drive fast)

Bottom line, I-90 or I-84 are both very safe routes. I would not worry about either route. (I-84 over Deadman/Meacham can be dicey during the winter, but you have already stated this is well ahead of winter).

I came over Deadman's pass to get here, and it was terrifying. Going back is what I am trying to avoid, as being on the outside will be worse, I think...

Thanks everyone! I think I will try I-90! Unless nobody else has a better idea before Wednesday!

I-90 to I - 25 south? (through WY)

Remember.... Eastbound you are going UP Deadman's (minimal scary). I-90 has days of mtns vs. 30 minutes I-84.

But... If you have not been on I-90, enjoy the view.
If you have to take I-25 south through WY, do it at night (no view) terrible winds possible ( in most of WY).

cwilson, I hope you are enjoying your trip.

I just wanted to mention that the last time I went up Deadman hill in July, it was flat out crazy! Made so by this idiot woman who couldn't keep her speed, nor her lane. I had to honk at her several times as she was cutting me off front and back. She was all over the place.
