My husband and our 2 daughters who are middle school and high school age moved to Seattle from Tucson Arizona 5 years ago. We love the culture, diversity, open-minded people and overall feel of Seattle. We love the walk-ability, easy access to city, water, mountains and even the weather. However we cannot afford it any longer! My husband just retired with a good pension but I'd still be working as a Hair Stylist.. If anyone has good suggestions on more affordable areas in the PNW that would be a good transition for the kids please help! We would really like to stay around $250,000.
Thanks for any feedback.

For a home???
Man, not sure that's even possible in a 40 mile halo/radius of the I-5 corridor (with Seattle being center).

Maybe across the Sound? Port Orchard? Somewhere on Whidbey?

I think you're looking at quite a bit farther out of Seattle (Everett, Snohomish, Mill Creek/Maltby, Tukwila, Renton) unless you go across the Sound. I think even in these areas you're going to be hard-pressed to find anything other than a condo for under $280,000.

Yeah, I guess looking over the original post, it didn't say it had to be near Seattle, just PNW.

Bellingham is a good mention. Or somewhere around Bellingham.

Now, there is a good little 'exodus' of Seattle-ites moving up there these days, so get it while the gettin's good.

Any small town with a jr college. Free FT college instead of wasting time in HS.... That will get your kids earning dough quicker, and out of the house. Then you can downsize to something affordable. Both my kids make more money than I ever did, maybe I will move home with them .... Don't think so.... But I do ask them for money on occasion!

For your job and future college needs... Bellingham is a great choice, Bremerton might do. PA or Centralia in a pinch..Kelso if you are desperate..

Take a look at Thurston county too. It seems there's a good selection of homes in the Olympia/Lacey/Tumwater and surrounding area for under the $275k range. You're still close to the Sound, good schools, and in a liberal-leaning area.

Bellingham, Olympia. Are you aware that the UW requires applicants from highschool to have either college classes on their record, or several AP courses, or an "international baccalaureate" degree? It's best to locate near a university, or a community college at least, so the kids can take college classes concurrently with their junior/senior HS classes, or at least--have the option to do that.
